Cash and prepaid payouts: the closest thing to money

Nine ways to take your balance as spendable money rather than store credit — prepaid Visa and Mastercard, and six cryptocurrencies. What each one is really like.

Every other category on the cashout wall ties your earnings to a shop. This one does not. Nine options, all from $5, that turn a balance into something you can spend where you like.

What is in this category

  • Prepaid cards — Visa Virtual, Mastercard, Mastercard Virtual
  • Cryptocurrency — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Solana, Polygon

They are grouped together because they share one property: nobody decides for you what the money is for. Everything else on the wall is a decision made in advance.

Prepaid cards

A card number, an expiry and a security code, delivered by email. No plastic arrives. You type it at an online checkout the way you would any card, and it spends anywhere that network is accepted.

Two limits worth knowing before you pick one. They are online-only, so there is nothing to tap in a shop. And anything that pre-authorises more than the balance will decline — car hire and hotel deposits are the usual culprits, because the hold is larger than the card.

Where they work, where they do not, and when to pick one over a gift card.

Crypto

Six coins, issued as a voucher rather than sent to an address. You redeem the code on the issuer's site, choose your coin, and send it to a wallet you control. That extra step exists because a payout to a wallet address cannot be reversed if something goes wrong on our side; a voucher can.

Crypto starts higher

Most of the wall starts at $5. Crypto vouchers start at $10, and the amount you receive in coin depends on the rate at the moment you redeem, not the moment you cash out.

Which to pick

If youPick
Know what you want to buyThe brand's own gift card — the rates are better
Do not know yet, or want to combine it with your own moneyPrepaid Visa or Mastercard
Already hold crypto and have a walletA crypto voucher
Are buying something in a physical shopA gift card — prepaid is online only

A last honest note: brand gift cards are usually the better value. The discount an issuer gives on retail is larger than on prepaid, and that discount is what funds the rate you earn at. Flexibility costs a little.
