Pet payouts: three cards for a recurring bill

Chewy, Petco and PetSmart, from $5. A small category with an unusual property — the thing you are buying comes round again every month.

Three brands, the smallest category on the wall, and one of the most sensible. Pet food is a bill that arrives whether or not you have a rewards balance, so a card here is a discount on something already scheduled.

What is on the wall

CardFromBest for
Chewy$5Online, subscription deliveries, the widest range
Petco$5In store, grooming and vet services in many locations
PetSmart$5In store, grooming, training classes

Chewy for food, the others for services

Chewy is delivery-first, and its autoship discount stacks with a gift card balance — the credit covers the order, the subscription discount comes off the price. That is the best combination in the category if you buy the same food every month.

Petco and PetSmart earn their place on services: grooming, training, and in many Petco locations a vet clinic. A gift card covers those as readily as it covers a bag of food, and they are the more expensive line on any pet owner's budget.

Vet services vary by location

Whether a card covers clinic services depends on whether the clinic is run by the shop or by an independent practice leasing space inside it. Worth asking at the counter before you assume.

Saving to a useful amount

$5 buys treats. $50 buys a month of food for a medium dog, and $100 — the cap — covers most of a quarter for a cat. Given the bill is recurring, letting the balance build to something that covers a whole delivery is the version of this that actually helps.
